By the time 1984 rolled around, we slowly began to see some regularity and consistency in what we now refer to as "80s horror." The slasher was becoming commonplace as practical effects continued to be taken to new heights. 1984 wasn't a particularly special year broadly speaking; however, it served as an extremely important turning point due to the release of A Nightmare on Elm Street. With its reality bending approach to the traditional slasher coupled with the lionization of its antagonist, it served as a trend setting film which influenced the genre for decades.1984 also saw the horror/comedy/family movie realize its full potential, as Gremlins seemingly took the world by storm.
